Ancient Architecture of Siena

Serene and beautiful, Siena is a city that is part of the World Heritage Sites. It’s a very ancient city built between 1100 to 1400 AD, during the medieval period.

From afar, Siena presents a stunning sight against the blue sky with its cluster of uniformly coloured ancient buildings. These structures are aligned in a harmonious monochromatic colour scheme, with subtle variations in hue, lightness, and warmth. Residents are not allowed to paint their houses in any colour they like; they must get permission from authorities and use approved colours.

As Siena is a cultural heritage site, its residents are also dedicated to preserving the city in its original form for many years. The town is situated at 322 meters above sea level and features a hilly terrain, with its streets constantly going up and down.

The clean and orderly streets have minimal traffic, and large vehicles are not allowed. Small cars can be seen occasionally, but foot traffic is predominant, making the city’s environment very health-friendly.

Siena is divided into 17 districts, each with its unique characteristics. Each district has its own identity and symbols. Although the buildings are closely packed together, each one displays its emblem, marking its territory. Locals often try to marry within their district to avoid difficulties that arise from inter-district marriages, such as negotiating customs and deciding on where to live.

A notable event in Siena is the Palio, a horse race held twice a year in July and August. The race takes place in Piazza del Campo, drawing large crowds. Hotels facing the square are fully booked with tourists during these events, with people watching from balconies.

The grand Siena Cathedral, built in the 12th century, is an example of Gothic architecture. It was constructed using white and dark green marble, giving it a striking appearance. The dark green marble appears almost black, making the cathedral seem as if it were built in Siena’s symbolic colours of black and white.

The history of Italian architecture is endless and ever-evolving, with each era bringing its unique styles and beauty. Modern advancements in architecture are built upon the legacy of ancient architectural knowledge, passed down through generations.

In a rapidly changing world, there are those who build modern structures and those who preserve ancient knowledge. Together, they strive to maintain a balance. What is considered new today will soon become old, and even newer innovations will emerge. The true value of one's art and architecture is not determined in the present but is realized after it withstands the test of time. If we only build for immediate utility, we will miss the opportunity to see structures that endure for centuries, just as we might miss the chance to live in a world as developed as ours.

Please make sure that our environment is not destroyed by our actions.
